Biography

His Eminence Metropolitan John of Dubna (civil name: Jean-Pierre Renneteau) was born on 13 November 1942 in Bordeaux, France. He studied at the Saint Serge Orthodox Theological Institute in Paris and was a disciple of Archimandrite Sophrony (Sakharov). In 1974, he was ordained a priest by Archbishop George (Tarassov) and for many years was responsible for the television program “Orthodoxie” on France 2. He was subsequently appointed rector of the French-speaking Orthodox parish of Sainte-Catherine – Sainte-Trinité in Chambésy (Geneva), which he served for nearly forty years.

On 13 February 2015, the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, on the proposal of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, unanimously elected him as Bishop of Charioupolis, auxiliary of the Patriarch. His episcopal ordination took place on 15 March 2015 at the Stavropegic Church of Saint-Paul, Orthodox Center of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Chambésy (Geneva). He was later appointed Locum-Tenens and eventually elevated to Metropolitan on 3 November 2019.

Canonical and Institutional Framework

Canonical Affiliation

Since 3 November 2019, the Archdiocese is canonically under the Russian Orthodox Church – Moscow Patriarchate. The canonical restoration formalized the continuity of liturgical and spiritual traditions, while integrating fully into the Moscow Patriarchate’s jurisdiction.

Legal and Organizational Decisions

14 September 2019: Revocation of the 1999 Tomos by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
3 November 2019: Formal canonical restoration during the Divine Liturgy, Metropolitan John elevated to Metropolitan.
Ensures full legal compliance with Canon Law, international religious regulations, and EU law on religious organizations.
